Sodio Bicarbonato 10 mEq / 10 ml — 10 Ampoules
Sodio Bicarbonato is the Italian name for sodium bicarbonate. This concentrated intravenous preparation supplies bicarbonate, a substance involved in maintaining the body's acid–base balance. It is used in clinical care when correction of excess acidity is needed.
Product Information
How Sodium Bicarbonate Works
Bicarbonate buffers excess hydrogen ions, helping to raise blood pH in acidosis. The reaction produces water and carbon dioxide, which is removed through the lungs. Treatment therefore requires attention to ventilation as well as acid–base balance.
Medical Uses
Sodium bicarbonate is used in selected cases of metabolic acidosis, including bicarbonate loss. It may also be used for alkalinisation in certain poisonings under specialist protocols. The underlying cause and blood-test results determine whether it is appropriate.
Administration
This concentrate is intended for intravenous use by healthcare professionals. Dilution and infusion rate follow the specific product instructions and clinical circumstances. It is not for intramuscular injection.
Dose and duration are individualised. Monitoring includes blood pH, bicarbonate, electrolytes and fluid balance.
Precautions and Possible Side Effects
Excessive administration can cause alkalosis, high sodium levels and fluid overload. Potassium and calcium balance may also be affected. Particular care is needed with impaired kidney function, heart failure or sodium retention.
Local irritation and tissue injury can occur if solution leaks outside the vein. Compatibility must be checked before combining it with other medicines; calcium-containing solutions can form precipitates.
Composition and Storage
Each ampoule supplies 10 mEq each of sodium and bicarbonate. Excipients and storage requirements should be checked in the manufacturer's leaflet for the pack supplied.
Use only clear, particle-free solution in intact ampoules. Opened ampoules are for single use; discard any remainder. Keep out of children's reach.
FAQ
What does mEq mean?
It means milliequivalent, a unit expressing the amount of an electrolyte in terms of its electrical charge.
Is 10 mEq/10 ml the same as 8.4%?
Yes. For sodium bicarbonate, both describe a concentration of 84 mg/ml.
Is one ampoule a standard treatment dose?
No. The ampoule size describes the presentation; the required dose depends on clinical assessment.
